Safety of work and the working environment
In a good working environment, workspaces, working methods and production methods are planned and implemented in such a way that employees can work and move around safely. The physical and mental capacities of employees must be taken into account in designing and planning work.
Many still work in the traditional way in the employer’s premises, but more and more people are working in multiple locations in the organisation’s places of business, at home, in customers’ or partners’ premises, in transport, in hotels, in cafés or other random places in their home country or abroad. Such a diverse environment poses challenges to safety management and well-being.
The key legal obligations from the perspective of safety management relate to the identification and prevention of hazards and employee orientation. Identification of hazards in a diverse and multi-location working environment and familiarisation of employees with safe and healthy working methods create the conditions for safe and healthy work.

Occupational accidents and diseases
Occupational accidents can be prevented by identifying and eliminating hazards altogether or, if that is not possible, by minimising them. When identifying hazards, any special circumstances at the workplace, such as abnormal conditions, must also be taken into account.
Physical factors
Identifying, mapping and controlling physical factors, such as heat, noise and vibration, and chemical and biological risk factors at the workplace is called occupational hygiene.
Chemical and biological agents

Machines, equipment and tools
In the regulations on machine safety, responsibility for safety lies with the designers, manufacturers and sellers of machines and employers procuring and using them.
Safe ways of working
Promoting safety at the workplace is a systematic activity that takes into account the tools, working environment, working methods, the organisation’s operations and working methods.
